Living with ADHD is like carrying a secret script that no one handed you. For years, I wore a mask - a carefully crafted persona that hid my true self from the world. But the journey to unmasking ADHD identity is not just about revealing what’s beneath; it’s about embracing it with warmth, humour, and courage. Let me take you through my story, my struggles, and the empowering discoveries that helped me thrive authentically.
The Mask I Wore: Understanding the Need to Hide
For a long time, I thought my ADHD was a flaw to be fixed. I tried to fit into boxes that were never made for me. The hyperfocus that made me lose track of time? I called it procrastination. The impulsivity that led to spontaneous decisions? I labelled it irresponsibility. The constant mental chatter? I blamed myself for being scatterbrain.
But here’s the truth: the mask was exhausting. It drained my energy and dimmed my light. I was playing a role, not living my life. If you’re nodding along, feeling that familiar weight, know this: you’re not alone, and you don’t have to keep hiding.
Why Do We Mask?
Masking is a survival tool. It’s how many women with ADHD navigate a world that often misunderstands them. We mimic behaviours, suppress our quirks, and push ourselves to meet expectations that don’t fit our wiring. But this comes at a cost:
Burnout from constant self-monitoring
Loss of identity as we disconnect from our true selves
Emotional exhaustion from hiding struggles
Recognising the mask is the first step to unmasking your ADHD identity.

Unmasking ADHD Identity: The Power of Self-Discovery
Unmasking is not about tearing down your identity; it’s about peeling back layers to reveal the authentic you. It’s a process of self-discovery, self-compassion, and self-acceptance. Here’s how I began to unmask my ADHD identity and how you can too:
1. Embrace Your Unique Brain
ADHD brains are wired differently, and that’s a strength, not a weakness. Instead of fighting your natural tendencies, learn to work with them. For example:
Use hyperfocus to dive deep into projects you love
Channel impulsivity into creativity and spontaneity
Accept that your energy levels fluctuate and plan rest accordingly
2. Create Safe Spaces
Find or build environments where you can be yourself without judgement. This might be a support group, a trusted friend, or a quiet corner at home. Safe spaces allow you to practice authenticity and recharge.
3. Practice Gentle Self-Talk
Replace harsh criticism with affirmations. When you stumble, say:
“It’s okay. I’m learning. I’m enough.”
This simple shift can transform your inner dialogue and boost your confidence.
4. Set Boundaries That Honour You
Saying no is a radical act of self-care. Protect your time and energy by setting clear boundaries. This might mean limiting social engagements or delegating tasks that overwhelm you.
5. Seek Professional Guidance
Therapists, coaches, or ADHD specialists can provide tailored strategies and emotional support. Don’t hesitate to reach out; you deserve guidance on this journey.

Navigating Challenges: From Burnout to Balance
Unmasking ADHD identity isn’t a straight path. There are bumps, setbacks, and moments of doubt. I faced burnout more than once, feeling like I was running on empty. But here’s what helped me regain balance:
Prioritise rest: Sleep and downtime are non-negotiable.
Break tasks into chunks: Small steps prevent overwhelm.
Celebrate small wins: Every achievement, no matter how tiny, is progress.
Use tools and reminders: Timers, apps, and planners can be lifesavers.
Remember, your journey is unique. What works for one person might not work for another. Be patient and kind to yourself as you experiment and learn.
Living Authentically: Thriving Beyond the Mask
The most beautiful part of unmasking is the freedom it brings. When I stopped hiding, I found joy in my quirks and strength in my struggles. I connected more deeply with others and, most importantly, with myself.
Here’s how you can start living authentically today:
Share your story: Vulnerability builds connection and breaks stigma.
Celebrate your ADHD superpowers: Creativity, resilience, empathy, and more.
Practice self-compassion daily: You are worthy exactly as you are.
Keep learning and growing: Your journey is ongoing, and that’s okay.
